These are general purpose 5mm LEDs with diffused lens and good brightness that work well for general indicator use.

The shorter of the two leads and flat side of the housing denotes the cathode.

For size comparison, a 3mm, 5mm and 10mm LED are shown to the right.

The LEDs are logic compatible with a max drive current of 20mA and a forward voltage drop of approximately 3.2V.

A current limiting series resistor is needed to protect the LED and/or the device being used to drive it.

At an operating voltage of 5V a series voltage dropping resistor of 91 ohms will provide max brightness.

A larger resistor of around 150- 470 ohm can be used to reduce current at a lower brightness.

Remember to never plug any LED directly to the power supply or it will destroy it!

Ensure that the current through the LED is never more than 20mA.

The easiest way to do this is to simply add a resister in series with the LED to reduce the Current to below 20mA.

For example, if you have a power supply of of 4.5V then you would need to add a resistor of at least 50 Ohm to ensure the LED has less than 20mA of Current going through it
